St John's, Antigua
A big property for those special romantic moments.
Sandals Grande Antigua has earned the title of “Most Romantic Beach Resort in the Caribbean” from the World Travel Awards for eleven consecutive years. What a way to start your journey with Grande Antigua, huh? This is a gorgeous, beautiful adults only, all-inclusive resort that spans 27 acres on Dickenson Bay and is often seen as a major destination for honeymooners and those celebrating special occasions.
This resort is almost seen as two resorts in one, as it is divided into the Caribbean Beachfront Village and the Mediterranean Oceanview Village. The Caribbean side sits closer to the beach with several pools and relatively flat terrain, while the Mediterranean area features newer buildings in a quieter setting. Want to stay closer to the action and not walk a lot? Go with the Caribbean side. Want better views and a little more peace and quiet? The Mediterranean area is for you.
Dickenson Bay is amazing, by the way, a beautiful 2 mile stretch of sand with beautiful water. I am trying to write it in a way that does not sound too cliché, but you know the deal, right? It is a beach with snow white sand and turquoise waters. Looks like something taken from Instagram, just without all the weird filters.
Sandals Grande Antigua has 11 complimentary restaurants ranging from Italian at Mario's to Japanese at Kimonos and seafood at Barefoot by the Sea. While the food is good, the dining options are solid rather than a perfect score. Soy Sushi Bar stands out as the best choice. You can never go wrong with free sushi, right? Night entertainment includes karaoke competitions, chocolate parties and live shows. You mostly come here, however, to relax and enjoy a romantic moment with your partner.
Another great perk is that getting to Antigua is not that complicated. It is just a short 3 hour flight from Miami and then just a quick 15 to 20 minute complimentary transfer to the resort. Antigua is home to many beautiful places and tons of other resort options, like Elite Island Resorts, who have five different resorts there that are also considered pretty good.
Just keep in mind that Dickenson Bay is a public beach with more vendors than typical Sandals Resorts. This means that someone will come to you selling towels, flags, sunscreen, fossils and just about anything you can think of. They will politely leave if you say you do not want anything, but it can be bothersome.
Sandals Grande Antigua is perfect for lovebirds, those who want a beautiful beach, lots of water activities and the chance to explore a unique Caribbean island. If you do not mind slightly older rooms and value a romantic atmosphere over the most unique restaurants and rooms, this award-winning resort will surely deliver memories that will last for a lifetime.
